B.S. St. Louis University College of Arts and Sciences, 1961 D.D.S. St. Louis University School of Dentistry, 1961 MILITARY SERVICE: Lieutenant , United States Navy Dental Corps, 1961 to 1963

FAMILY:

Married to Sue for fifty eight years; four children: J. Martin, Michael E., John A. and Mary Elizabeth; and eight grandchildren.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER:

Established a private solo practice in suburban St. Louis in 1963. Organized and founded a group practice in 1974, designed and built an innovative clinic with 18 dental chairs in a circle. Founded Mid East Health Care in 1979 to provide private dental care to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in partnership with Sheik Zaki Yamani. Designed and installed Den-Tal-Ez equipment in three dental clinics with a total of 64 clinical treatment rooms in Saudi Arabia for Aramco Oil Company. Left dental group practice in 1987 to focus on customer service in a fee for service solo practice. An innovative environment was created that eliminated the traditional front desk by placing computer terminals wherever a transaction could take place, even in the treatment rooms. Dental Assistants and Hygienists make appointments, collect money, update records, plan treatment and track treatment. The patient enters a very inviting reception area where they are greeted by a concierge and made to feel at home. This office was featured on the cover of Dentistry Today magazine in early 1990 as a model for future dental office design. Many dentists have brought their teams to St. Louis to experience first hand the leadership and entrepreneurial spirit that has made this practice successful. Dr. Blaes teaches the behavioral and practice management principles that are so necessary to thrive in a fee for service practice. He pioneered many innovative techniques in cosmetic dentistry. He continues to teach these faster, better, easier methods through his lectures, hands-on workshops and his monthly contributions to Dental Economics magazine. The practice is thriving today in an insurance free, fee for service setting that emphasizes preventive, esthetic, reconstructive and implant dentistry. In 1996, Dr. Blaes was hired by PennWell Publishing Company as Editor of Dental Economics magazine and Dental Equipment and Materials magazine. He has been responsible for the complete repositioning of Dental Economics as the premier dental practice management magazine in the industry. He was responsible for the total redesign of the magazine, giving it a much needed facelift with a heavier stock of paper for easy reading and better printing of color. Dr. Blaes has been active in bringing new advertising into the magazine and he is well known and respected by dental manufacturers and distributors. His editorial direction is responsible for Dental Economics being the best read magazine in the dental industry. Dr. Blaes is recognized as an expert on dental materials and techniques and he lectures routinely on these topics.

St. Louis University -President, Dental Alumni Association 1976 to 1982.  Responsible for selection of Dental Alumni Merit Award nominee for the University Chancellor.  Responsible for planning of annual alumni reunion dinners. St. Catherine Laboure Parish - Treasurer of Men's Club 1969 to 1974, President of Men's Club 1975.  Responsible for supporting over 600 boys and girls on sports teams (Soccer, Basketball, Baseball and Softball).  Responsible for Fund Raisers, providing coaches, providing and maintaining equipment and fields. St. Catherine Laboure Parish - Chairman and founder of St. Catherine Laboure School board 1968 to 1972.  Responsible for budgeting, maintenance, new building and liaison to parents of Parish School for 450 students. Rural Parish Workers of Christ the King - Served on Advisory board 1968 to present.  Chairman of King's Men Dinner 1978, 1979.  Responsible for major fund raising dinner.  Reorganized dinner and increased donations by 50%. Cor Jesu Academy - President of Advisory board 1984- 1987.   Member of Advisory board to 1990.  Served on board of Father's Club 1986.  Served as cochairman (with my wife) of Dinner Auction fundraiser 1986 and 1987.  Responsible in 1987 for totally reorganizing Dinner Auction.  Increased attendance by 25%, increased dollars raised by 33% and a good time was had by all.  Cor Jesu is a private girl's high school in suburban St. Louis . St. Louis Area Council, Boy Scout of America - Chairman of Professional Section for major fund raising drive 1982 to 1983. Guardian Angel Settlement - Member of Advisory Board 1978 to 1990.  Co-Chairman of annual Dinner Auction 1982- reorganized into major fundraiser. St. Catherine Laboure Parish - Organized and Co-Chaired (with my wife) Dinner Auction 1984, major fundraiser to add cooling system to Parish school.  Raised $15,000 more than goal.
